چکیده

One key challenge for increasing the throughput of future wireless local area networks at higher layers is matching the capabilities of the physical (PHY) layer with the need of exchanging small control messages at these higher layers. The bottleneck in this regard lies at the medium access control (MAC) layer that may waste considerable channel resources in the transmission of these small packets. In this contribution we introduce superposed signaling, a PHY layer extension that opens up a new way to map small packets to the channel while reducing inefficient use of the medium. This scheme provides a low-rate signaling sublayer at the PHY level in addition to a high-rate data sublayer. These sublayers share the channel by a variant of multi-carrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA). We investigate the design of receivers that are capable of detecting the signals of both sublayers, and focus on a structure employing successive interference cancellation (SIC). Our main interest is in identifying the operation modes in terms of per-user powers in which it is possible to use these receivers. Furthermore, it will be shown that the scheme is appropriate for sublayer-synchronous as well as asynchronous scenarios. Keywords— Superposed signaling, multi-carrier spread spectrum, OFDM, successive interference cancellation.

Supporting Bandwidth Guarantee and Mobility for Real-Time Applications on Wireless LANs

The proliferation of IEEE 802.11-based wireless LANs opens up avenues for creation of several tetherless and mobility oriented services. Most of these services, like voice over WLAN, media streaming etc., generate delay and bandwidth sensitive traffic. These traffic flows require undisrupted network connectivity with some QoS guarantees. Unfortunately, there is no adequate support built into th...

Medium Access Control Mechanisms in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Medium access control protocol plays an important role in providing fair and efficient allocation of limited bandwidth in wireless LANs. The basic medium access model in the IEEE 802.11 standard, known as DCF (Distributed Coordination Function), is widely used in wireless LANs. Research efforts in wireless multihop networks, where wireless nodes need to forward packets on other’s behalf, try to...

Seeker: A bandwidth-based association control framework for wireless mesh networks

The rapid deployment of wireless mesh networks across universities and enterprises, and the pervasiveness of mobile devices equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, has resulted in a scenario wherein end users have the option to choose from a multitude of access points at any given location. Moreover, with the increasing availability of rich online content, there has been a steady increase in mobile I...

Dynamic channel assignment with delay and loss considerations for wireless TDMA LANs

The scarce available bandwidth and the unpredictable, variable bit rate traffic in modern packet-switched wireless LANs, require an efficient channel allocation scheme. In this paper we make an overview of traditional call-by-call Dynamic Channel Assignment (DCA) methods and propose a novel DCA method that aims at assigning channels in a more dynamic way, based on the quality-of-service (QoS) r...

Transmission of MIMO - OFDM signal using Optical Link

— Wireless networks have quickly become part of everyday life. Wireless LANs, cell phone networks, and personal area networks are just a few examples of widely used wireless networks. However, wireless devices are range and data rate limited. The research community has spent a great deal of effort on finding ways to overcome these limitations. In other words, high Data-Rate wireless access is d...
